Frequently Asked Questions

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT LEARNING TO FLY

What is a Private Pilot Certificate?

A Private Pilot Certificate allows you to fly an airplane day or night in visual flight conditions and carry passengers. While operating expenses may be shared with your passengers, you may not get paid for the flight. As a Private Pilot, your airplane can take you anywhere you, please. Now that’s freedom.

What are the age and physical requirements?

You can start flight lessons at any age, but you must be 16 to solo and 17 to receive a Private Pilot Certificate (a Private Pilot Certificate allows you to carry passengers). There is no upper age limit – it is never too late to experience the thrill of flying. You need to be able to read, speak, and understand the English language and pass a physical exam given by a local Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical examiner.

What about flight training – how long does it take?

The FAA requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight time in order to become a Private Pilot. Of those 40 hours, 25-30 are with your instructor and a minimum of 10 are solo. We have found the average student takes approximately 4 to 6 months to get their Private Pilot Certificate. Some students have earned their license in as little as 1 month – the time it takes is up to you.

When and how often are my flight lessons?

We are open 7 days a week, all year long, so your lessons can be planned around your schedule. You can schedule lessons daily, weekly, or monthly if that is what your time schedule allows. You can fly morning, afternoon, or evening and your training will include lessons flying at night.

When are flight school classes held?

We do offer some formal ground schools classes from time to time for those that like to learn in a classroom setting. However, most of the time you will be learning one on one with an instructor. You can schedule lessons around your schedule at any time of the day with your instructor.

How much does it cost to learn to fly?

The price depends greatly on how frequently you fly, what aircraft you choose to train in, and how much time you spend studying prior to conducting your flight and ground lessons.

I think I would like to try flying – How do I get started?

Just give us a call at 1-877-FLY-UTAH and we will schedule you for your first lesson. Or, if you prefer we can schedule you for an Introductory Flight where you can actually pilot the airplane and experience the thrill of flying. You can take at least one other person with you and the Introductory Flight is the same price!

What kind of airplane will I be flying?

You will be learning to fly in a 2 or 4 seat Cessna. They are single-engine, high wing airplanes and are the world’s most popular training aircraft.

What are the benefits of obtaining a Private Pilot Certificate?

Once you earn your pilot certificate, the adventure has just begun. In a light airplane, you travel further and faster and you have fun getting wherever you’re going. That means you might start looking forward to business trips for a change. Or, you’ll add some spice to your weekends with day trips you never imagined were possible.

What if I want a career in Aviation?

There are literally hundreds of different kinds of flying jobs. You could fly in the big leagues, the major airlines. You could fly a Citation Jet on charter, for a corporation’s flight department, or for an air ambulance service. LE Aviation offers all the training necessary to train you for an exciting career in aviation.

May I purchase a flying lesson for a friend or relative?

Yes, you may stop by anytime and purchase a gift certificate to give to a friend or relative. For people that have never flown before or have limited flight experience, we recommend purchasing an Introductory Flight Lesson which lasts about 30 minutes.
